The SEND Provision: Your Questions Answered

We understand that families often have questions about the support available for students with SEND. This Frequently Asked Questions page brings together answers to the most common queries, helping you find clear and practical information about our provision, processes, and how we work together to support every child.

OUR SEND PROVISION
What support does the school provide for students with SEND?
At Orleans Park School, we offer a wide range of support tailored to individual needs. This includes in-class assistance, targeted small-group interventions and access to specialist services, including the Specialist Resource Provision (SRP), Homework Club, Nurture Provision, Functional Skills and Linked LSAs. Our goal is to ensure every student feels included, valued and supported.
How does the school identify students who may have additional needs?
We work closely with primary schools, teachers and families to identify needs as early as possible. Transition information, assessments and observations are used to build a clear picture of each student’s needs. Where concerns arise, we assess using appropriate tools and plan support collaboratively with families.
Who are the school’s SENDCos?
Harriet Parkinson and Rebecca Powling are the school’s SENDCos, supported by Deputy SENDCo Andreja Grasic. Together, they oversee SEND provision across Orleans Park School and support students, staff and families.
How many students with SEND do you currently support?
This varies each year, but we are proud to be an inclusive school supporting students across a wide range of needs.
LEARNING AND CLASSROOM SUPPORT
How is support provided in lessons?
Teachers adapt learning through scaffolding, differentiated resources, assistive technology and adaptive teaching. Students may also receive LSA support, literacy interventions, numeracy interventions and specialist input where appropriate.
Are teachers trained to support students with SEND?
Yes. All staff receive regular training on SEND strategies, neurodiversity and inclusive classroom practice. Our SEND in Focus approach supports consistent classroom practice across the school.
How is my child’s progress monitored?
Progress is monitored through classroom assessment, feedback, regular reviews and Edukey Pupil Passports. Support is reviewed with students and families to ensure the right provision is in place.
TRANSITION AND ADMISSIONS
How do you support transition from primary to secondary school?
We work closely with primary SENDCos to gather detailed transition information. Students benefit from transition visits, opportunities to meet key staff and familiarisation with the school environment before starting.
Can we visit the SEND Department before applying?
Families of children with EHCPs in Year 5 can arrange a visit by contacting learningsupportadmin@orleanspark.school. All other families are warmly invited to attend the main school open events in September.
SUPPORTING DIFFERENT NEEDS
How do you support students with autism, ADHD or dyslexia?
Support is personalised and may include visual timetables, structured routines, quiet spaces, laptops or assistive technology, sensory breaks, flexible seating and specialist teaching within the SRP.
What if my child has Social, Emotional, Mental Health difficulties?
Students can access The Zone, ELSA support and Nurture provision. These supports help students build confidence, emotional regulation, resilience and positive relationships.
COMMUNICATION WITH FAMILIES
How will I be kept informed about my child’s progress and support?
Families are kept informed through annual reviews, written updates and regular communication. Families can contact the SENDCos, Deputy SENDCo or their child’s form tutor for advice or updates.
What are SEND Surgery Mornings?
SEND Surgery Mornings are 15-minute appointments where families can discuss progress, support strategies or concerns. To book, contact learningsupportadmin@orleanspark.school.
Will my child have an Individual Support Plan or similar?
Yes. Students receiving SEND support have a Pupil Passport on Edukey, outlining their strengths, targets and strategies that help them learn best.
How is my child involved in their own support?
Student voice is central to our SEND provision. Students are involved in setting goals, reflecting on what helps them learn and updating their Pupil Passport.
WORKING WITH EXTERNAL SPECIALISTS
Do you work with outside professionals?
Yes. We work with professionals such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Local Authority Advisory Services.
INCLUSION, WELLBEING AND ACCESSIBILITY
How does the school promote inclusion and prevent bullying?
Orleans Park School has a strong ethos of respect, inclusion and equality. Staff are trained to identify and respond quickly to concerns, and diversity is celebrated across the school.
Are there safe or quiet spaces for students who need them?
Yes. Students can access calm areas and support rooms in The Zone and Learning Support during the school day.
What reasonable adjustments are made for exams?
Students may be eligible for Exam Access Arrangements such as extra time, a reader, scribe or rest breaks. These are assessed and reviewed in line with JCQ regulations.
EHCPS AND REVIEWS
How does the school support students with an EHCP?
Students with EHCPs receive tailored support as outlined in their plan. Each student has a linked LSA, and annual reviews are held to review progress and outcomes.
What if my child’s needs change over time?
Support is flexible and responsive. If a student’s needs change, we reassess provision and adapt support accordingly.
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
How do you support students with SEND when they move on after Year 11?
We work with local colleges, training providers and careers advisers to support smooth transitions. Students with EHCPs receive additional support through AFC’s Next Steps programme.
What life skills or independence support is available?
Through Functional Skills and Nurture programmes, students develop independence, organisation, confidence, self-advocacy and decision-making skills.
